How BoscoBox Was Born
About one year ago I bought a quality black metal gun box. The reason was I now have grandchildren that are of the age that they can get into the drawer beside my bed where I kept my 1911 pistol for home protection.
I was in the process of getting the fingerprint lock to identify me. It was problematic and did not work every time. Seems it allowed me to open the box about 8 out of every time 10 times I tried. My wife walked into the bedroom where I was working and asked, “What is that?”
I explained it was a safety gun box to secure our pistol and to keep it safe from grandkids. Her response was, “No way you’re putting that ugly thing in my bedroom!” She was right. It didn’t work perfectly, and it was big, black, and ugly.
So, I went to my wood shop and created a wooden box on my CNC router and secured it with a magnetic cabinet lock. Showed it to my wife who said that would not only work, but that she loved it. It was beautiful. I showed it to a friend, and he wanted two. Another friend wanted five! One more friend wanted twenty to give away as Christmas presents for his clients. Wow! A business was taking shape.
Finally, I showed my homemade wooden gun box with the magnetic lock to another friend who owns a metal fabrication company. He said, “I want one of those, but I want to make the box out of metal, powder coat it, and add a second key lock – a traditional hook and hasp.” He explained that if I let him make the box out of metal, and I carved just the lid out of wood, it would be more secure, easier to build, and yet maintain its beauty. He was right!
Voila, now we can’t make enough of them. We named the box and company BoscoBox after our beloved family dog Bosco who always protected us. We let the customer decide what type of wood, what design they want on the wooden lid, and how they want to personalize the underside of the lid. It is such a pleasure to build a product that has such beauty and still serves a great purpose – keeping people safe.
